Avbvrn is a Frankfurt based electronic music producer, live act and dj who oscillates between diverse deconstructed club sounds that include dance as well as experiment-driven electro-accoustics and percussions.

"return to.." is his debut album after a lot of other amazing releases such as Caldera on DECISIONS, a well composed piece that reminds of listening to a thrilling audio-book.

One of the aspects of the current contemporary political/socio-cultural landscape is that symbols and patterns from the past are cropping up more and more to support reactionary concepts. The album title return to.... makes reference to these reactionary tendencies, but Avbvrn also sees an ambivalence to the phrase that he likes. Often the past is invoked as a warning as well - we don't want to return to periods of suffering and injustice (that we think we have moved beyond). At the same time however, the past can sometimes feel comforting ("back when I was a child") or hopeful ("look at what others have been able to achieve"). So when we look at the past and think about which aspects were important or valuable we are always balancing those aspects against those that we reject. Therefore the title tries to highlight the tension retrospection carries with it.
This second album was composed in the final months of 2019.
Avbvrn developed a strange feeling towards that year and was really preoccupied by the ways that capital not only hinders freedom of expression, but also limits freedom itself by binding existence to forms of production. These themes were also explored in Austerity (released on Display in January) and played a prominent role in conceptualizing and composing the music for return to…

A few of the critical direction-giving tracks (Inconspicuous Production, Opportunity Costs) were born during production of music for the performance It’s my house and I live here that he did together with Frances Chiaverini, Robyn Doty, Julia Eichten, and Mathias Rieker. That performance and its investigation of themes of women’s freedom from bondage and celebration of their power really pushed and inspired him to explore a clearer and more emotive perspective to production. A lot of Avbvrn’s previous work was really guided by an interest in a technical approach sound-design and rhythm, but for the music that ended up on return to… he aimed for technical methods to support atmosphere and mood even more.

Some of his favorite music conjures up a strong feeling of a complete “world”, and Avbvrn also wanted this work to be cohesive and feel like it encapsulates a specific time, place, and context. In terms of production, this led to working with a palette of sounds that reappears across different tracks, as well as an emphasis on sounds with haptic qualities. Field recordings that he made figure in every single track and were often the first sounds used when composing. The production of return to… is also extremely indebted to DJ Screw, whose perspective on music and ability to shape music by recontextualizing was very influential to his approach of organization time and repetition as well the layering of sonic material.
